About NZLO

The New Zealand Linguistics Olympiad (NZLO) is a national competition for students who enjoy languages, puzzles, logic, and problem-solving.

Participants are challenged to investigate unfamiliar languages, decipher writing systems, discover hidden patterns, and solve linguistic puzzles using reasoning and creativity. Much like a mathematical puzzle, success depends not on prior knowledge, but on careful observation, logical thinking, and curiosity.

All information needed to solve the problems is provided in the competition. Students do not need to have studied linguistics or speak multiple languages before participating.

NZOL introduces students to the fascinating science of language while helping them develop analytical reasoning, critical thinking, communication skills, and confidence in tackling unfamiliar challenges.

The competition is open to secondary-school students throughout Aotearoa New Zealand and is designed to encourage broad participation, intellectual curiosity, and a lifelong interest in language and language science.

NZOL is organised as a non-profit educational initiative dedicated to promoting linguistic problem-solving and academic enrichment for young people across New Zealand.

What is Linguistics?

Linguistics is the scientific study of language.

It explores how languages are structured, how people communicate, how children acquire language, how sounds and writing systems work, and how language varies across cultures and communities.

Linguists investigate questions such as:

  • How do children learn language?

  • Why do languages have different grammar systems?

  • How can we decode an unknown language?

  • How does language influence communication and society?

  • How can language technologies such as speech recognition and artificial intelligence understand human language?

Linguistics combines elements of language, logic, psychology, anthropology, computer science, and data analysis.

You do not need to speak multiple languages to enjoy linguistics. What matters most is curiosity, pattern recognition, and problem-solving.

Linguistics in Everyday Life

Linguistics plays an important role in:

  1.  Translation and multilingual communication

  2. Artificial Intelligence and ChatGPT

  3.  Speech recognition and voice assistants

  4. Language technologies and social media

  5.  Language education and literacy

  6. Understanding how people think and communicate
